Date and Venue
January 21 (noon) through January 23, 2003 (noon)
Arabella Sheraton Bogenhausen Hotel Arabellastrasse 5, D–81925 Munich, Germany
Rationale
Sharing spatial information and services among different user communities is the challenge that producers and users of geographic information and software products are facing. The key–word is interoperability, understood as the ability of two or more autonomous, heterogeneous, distributed digital entities (e.g. systems, applications, procedures, directories, inventories or data sets) to communicate and cooperate among themselves despite differences in language, context, or content. These entities should be able to interact with one another in meaningful ways without special effort by the user – the data producer or consumer – be it human or machine.
Registries, catalogues and catalogue services are at the core of finding and sharing information, and paramount to the geographic information interoperability.
Target Audience
The target audience is people having an interest or responsibility related to the sharing of geographic information and geographic information services among communities.
Purpose and Desired Outcome
  • To make known latest information and status about GI registries, catalogues, catalogue services and metadata and their use in geographic content–based contexts for collaborators (government agencies), value added suppliers, and citizens to discover, access, retrieve and publish spatial information,
  • Summarise European market developments and trends for building distributed interoperable e–Services warehouses for government agencies and citizens and
  • To provide workshop participants a forum to
    • Define the state of play over near and mid term timeframes (2003–2007) from National and European perspectives
    • Review and discuss current policies and approaches for e–Services distribution of GI and non spatial information and assess policy and practice changes required
    • To develop a set of recommendations for national and European stakeholders.
The GINIE Consortium will produce a Workshop Report including meeting minutes and presentations along with the participant recommendations according to established GINIE protocol. In addition, an Executive Summary will be produced, translated into 5 languages for wide dissemination.
