Aim Back to Top
The aim of this Workshop is to develop a cohesive Geographic Information Strategy at the European level by:
  • considering the current position of local/provincial/regional governments with regard to data interoperability from the local level through to the global level and vice a versa
  • comparing the experiences in Europe with those in other regions of the world
  • comparing the experiences of the geographic information sector with other sectors such as statistics and health
  • assessing the needs and the issues that should be addressed that will enable data inter operability at all levels to become a reality
  • making recommendations as to the way forward
Reading List Back to Top

Objectives of Working Groups
Working Group 1 Data Production in the Local to Global context
Leader Günther Pichler GINIE (OGC (Europe))
Rapporteur Mick Cory, Ordnance Survey - Northern Ireland
1 Sustainable production that maximises the usability at all levels within the SDI
2 The need (presence of) for a production framework (contracts, regulations, technical specifications, standards) that irrespective of whom actually produces the data, the framework ensures that the data is produced cost effectively to a defined quality, time scale and that it is fit for purpose.
Working Group 2 Data Distribution in the Local to Global context
Leader Max Craglia GINIE (University of Sheffield)
  Rapporteur Pasquale Di Donato, LABSITA
1 The presence of an inclusive cost effective infrastructure (physical, organisational components) at all levels within the SDI both horizontally and vertically
2 Is the value (the need for) of the infrastructure appreciated by all (Governments, Investors, SMEs, Customers, and Society)?
Working Group 3 Data Utilisation in the Local to Global context
  Leader Chris Corbin GINIE (EUROGI)
Rapporteur Robin Smith, University of Sheffield
1 Does the overall system (of data production and distribution) support and enable all parts of the value chain that ends with the customer (data user) in an inclusive and effective way at all levels of the SDI?
2 Is the system fit for purpose for all participants within the value chain?

Participants Back to Top
The participants represent a broad cross section of government, research and industry on pan-European, national and regional levels, and represented both the spatial and non-spatial communities.
